WWT NRPs Significantly Reduce Torque and Drag in ERD Well

Executive Summary
An operator requested the use of WWT NRPs to reduce torque while drilling three sections of an ERD well:

  • 12-1/4” (pilot hole): 4,600–6,732 mMD
  • 12-1/4” x 13-1/2” (main hole): 4,725–6,155 mMD
  • 8-1/2” x 9.15” (main hole): 6,155–8,349 mMD

A total of 129 x SS3-658 NRPs were installed, targeting areas of highest side forces in the build and into the tangent section from 925–2,525 mMD.

NRP Performance
Actual torque and hookload were back-modelled. Results showed a 25% reduction in torque as well as an 11% reduction in pick-up weight, indicating that the NRPs were effective in reducing both rotating and sliding friction.

All NRPs remained in good condition at the end of the job. The same set of NRPs was used across all sections, drilling a total of 5,793 m and approximately 2.1 million revolutions.
